The annual national Italian stroke survey was published on a large diffusion journal (FOCUS) inclusion criteria >50 stroke patients admitted per year in 2011. Markers of performance mortality a 1-month, re-admission in the month following the discharge for a stroke. Data as usual available from the national  health care authorities.

Mortality rates in 2011 was 11.6 and re admission 10.62 (the best Italian centres had 2.73 and 7.31).

The beneficial effect of intravenous thrombolytic therapy in patients with acute ischemic stroke attributable to internal carotid artery (ICA) occlusion remains unclear. A multicentric study gave new data on this topic. According to Italian investigators: in patients with stroke attributable to ICA occlusion, thrombolytic therapy,  results in a significant reduction in the proportion of patients dependent in activities of daily living. Increases in death and any intracranial bleeding were the trade-offs for this clinical benefit.

Paris, France and Ingelheim, Germany, 29th August 2011 – Last night at an award ceremony in Paris, the 32 winning projects of the global disease awareness initiative 1 Mission 1 Million – Getting to the Heart of Stroke were announced. The projects were chosen by the public and a panel of experts.
